What is changing in Rumson's restaurant scene this fall?
As Patch reported, Salt Creek Grille served its last mesquite grilled dinner on Bingham Avenue on December 31, 2025, closing out 27 years on the Navesink after the restaurant announced in November that it had reached the end of its lease. Roots Steakhouse, a Morris Plains-based group already running dining rooms in Morristown, Ridgewood, Summit, and Princeton, signed on almost immediately to take the space. As of the most recent local reporting this past August, the building was still under renovation for the planned Roots Steakhouse, with no opening date announced.
On East River Road, a father and son working with the Diaco family are behind two restaurants a block apart. Their restaurants are part of Rumson's dining scene alongside the planned Roots Steakhouse on Bingham Avenue.
Roots Steakhouse at 4 Bingham Avenue
Salt Creek Grille was the room locals booked for a river view and a mesquite grill without leaving the borough. When it announced its closure, a spokesperson for Harvest Restaurant Group, which owns Roots, told Patch:
"We are very excited to be opening Roots Steakhouse in the old Salt Creek Grille location."
That was back in the winter. Renovations began not long after at 4 Bingham Avenue, and by spring the coverage read almost identically to the winter coverage: underway, no date set. By August, the building remained under renovation, with no opening date announced. For a resident deciding where to eat tonight, the practical fact is simple: Roots Steakhouse wasn't open yet.
Two Blocks Away, the Same Family Runs Two Rooms
East River Road is also home to established restaurants. Victor Rallo and his son Jake, working with the Diaco family, have run Undici Taverna Rustica for years, building it into one of the Rallos' signature Italian rooms. In January 2024, the same partnership opened River Pointe Inn at 132 East River Road, a block from Undici, trading Tuscan for French.
The kitchen belongs to chef Josh Laurano, who earned a Michelin star working in Manhattan before landing in Rumson. New Jersey Monthly named River Pointe Inn one of the state's best new restaurants, and New Jersey Monthly's review of the space singled out the marble bar, leather banquettes, and rough-hewn beams for delivering "a measure of European panache" before the food even arrives. Jake Rallo told New Jersey Monthly the goal was straightforward: "We wanted to give Rumson that New York City feel in the suburbs."
Two restaurants, one family, one block. That's not an accident. It's a bet that a small riverside town can support more than one serious kitchen if the room is right, and the packed weeknight dining rooms at both restaurants suggest the bet is paying off.
Barnacle Bill's Closed on Purpose
The other story on the water this year wasn't an opening. It was a restaurant that closed itself, as NJ 101.5 reported.
Barnacle Bill's, the Ocean Avenue institution that's been serving burgers and raw bar plates for more than 40 years, shut its doors on February 2, 2026, for what the owners called necessary repairs and preventative maintenance. Sam, one of the owners, told NJ 101.5 that the floor structure near the bar needed attention. Nobody forced the closure. The team chose it.
Barnacle Bill's reopened less than two weeks later with new siding out front, in a color Sam described to NJ 101.5 simply as "barnacle blue," and with one change that matters more than the paint. Lunch service. What had been a dinner-only stop on Ocean Avenue is now open through the day, and the outdoor patio got a full renovation of its own, timed to reopen for Memorial Day weekend.
The repairs and added lunch service mark a new chapter for the Ocean Avenue restaurant.
The Anchor That Never Left
Not every seat on this map is new. Chef David Burke reopened the old Fromagerie building at 26 Ridge Road as Red Horse in March 2021, bringing the space full circle to where he'd worked as a line cook decades earlier. The menu leans on Burke's Himalayan salt dry-aged steaks with Asian-influenced sides, and the second-floor Loft at Red Horse adds a sushi bar most steakhouses skip entirely. It's been running the whole time this shuffle has played out elsewhere in town.
